Business Woman of the Year
Our 4 finalists were all successful women who have made a big impact on the business or charity where they work.
Our winner, Selina Baylis, has the enthusiasm and drive needed to take a business forward. She is a very positive person and always has a plan. Working for the Pre-school Learning Alliance, she manages 2 nurseries; Laindon Nursery and Northlands Park. She has managed Laindon Nursery for over 6 years, after working her way up through the ranks. At the time she took over, the nursery was showing a deficit but Selina, together with her staff, has turned it around and now it shows a profit. She ran workshops to raise awareness of financial management and implemented changes to reduce wastage. This has enabled them to improve the facilities and décor of the centre.
Selina took an innovative proposal to her interview for the manager’s job at Northlands Park 18 months ago and has never looked back. Now managing both centres, Selina shared the best practices between the 2 nurseries and streamlined their procedures. She motivates and manages her staff well and likes to bring out the best in people. She encourages and inspires them to grow, and makes time to listen to them despite her busy schedule. She recognises how much they have contributed towards the success of the nurseries.
Selina has set her sights higher and her goal is to manage all 4 Essex nurseries for the Alliance and even has her business plan mapped out! Whatever she turns her hand to and sets her mind on, Selina has the motivation and inspiration to achieve!
